Then there's Kaho. It's a known fact that Eriol's love interest is Kaho Mizuki, the teacher that Sakura always admired and the woman who once loved Touya. Eriol had dropped hints of there being someone for him, but he never revealed who it was. Not until the last volume of the manga is it revealed to the readers that Kaho is the one he loves. I felt that this site wouldn't be appropriate without a section focused on her. From what I've read and heard, I can discern two schools of thought concerning Kaho, both of which I would like to touch up on with my own two cents.

  • Age. What's she doing with Eriol for someone her age?
  • Canon. It's what CLAMP wrote, and that's the way I like it.

Concerning the first point, I think it's odd that people are squicked by the age when there are different relationships in the series that exhibit unorthodox characteristics, especially those with large age gaps. Before Eriol was Touya, correct? What about Terada and Rika? I initially felt uncomfortable about the relationship between Eriol and Kaho a bit, possibly because the older person in question was a woman instead of a man, but as I thought it over, gender shouldn't be an excuse either. Their relationship was something I came to turns with, and who could be upset with such a person like Kaho when Eriol gazes upon her with his kindest eyes?

As for the second point, I'm sure no one will ever draw up a truce when it comes to canon versus fanon. Yes, writers have the power to make truths within the worlds they create, and who can deny what's intended to be written in the first place? But there will always be people who disagree with the original creator's intent. In some cases, that might be a good thing. (New Doctor Who, anyone?) What I mean to say is, in fandom, canon is fact and fanon is imagination, but there's not necessarily a "right" ship to ride on since such choices are done on impulses and feelings. I've been on both sides before in different fandoms. In this case, I'm not out to start a ship war. I do accept the fact that Kaho's character is in the series, and I acknowledge that she gets her happy ending with Eriol. Although I do like her as an individual, I can't say that I support the relationship. I accept it, but I don't support it.

I spent the last two paragraphs with arguments that essentially defend the Eriol/Kaho relationship and the right to support any relationship, canon aside. Probably contradictory points, but let's just say I pulled a Voltaire here. But in my own words, I mean to say that tolerance is key when it comes to ships. There's absolutely no point in arguing because no one changes from a single dispute.
