Tomoyo. (大道寺 知世) One of the few characters who have the pleasure of knowing Sakura's adventures while also being as magical as a rock, she smiles with a mischievous sort of glee. She relishes any opportunity to dress Sakura up and down in all sorts of colors, puffs, ribbons, and more, while making sure to keep every moment on camera. But her enthusiasm has its limits. She knows when to set aside her hyped up enthusiasm, imposing camera, and mischeivous hijinks. And when you thinks no one's looking, Tomoyo has an eye looking your way, aptly mastering the skill of reading minds and piecing together ways to tease you. She's probably the best friend a girl could ever want.

She's talented in multiple areas, such as clothing, music, and videography. All these fields of interest contribute to much embarrassment on Sakura's part, but Tomoyo endeavors in making Sakura look her best. Aside from her talents, Tomoyo never seems to get upset and acts entirely selfless for the sake of her best friend.

Present in the series since the beginning, Tomoyo has proven herself to be an excellent secret keeper and a dedicated companion. Although well-protected by her mother and the luxuries of her lifestyle, she's courageous at the sight of danger. She compensates for her lack of powers with her perception and shrewdness. Almost like a mother herself, she watches over Sakura and familiarizes with what is known to Sakura. She'll say whatever she feels appropiately, and any secrets she may come upon, she'll keep dutifully.

Her idiosyncrasies lead readers to expect Tomoyo to throw Sakura into a frivolous outfit while sounding out her trademark "Ohohoho!" giggle. But that's just the exterior. Her affections extend beyond that, but she never lets them show entirely. I said before that she was mastering the art of mind reading. Well, that should come well with the skill of concealing her own mind from others, don't you agree? Of course, she may be direct... but that's for another section.

Tomoyo is much of a static character, someone who doesn't grow during the series, what with all the maturity she has already. If anything, she helps Sakura to grow by helping Syaoran and Sakura come together. Always count on Tomoyo to be able to push others with determination if they aren't willing to do so themselves.

Following thoughts. In reality, there's no such person who has the emotional capacity as Tomoyo does. Her patience, kindness, thoughtfulness, perception, and selflessness at her age? It's probably not appropriate to poke at CLAMP's ability to develop characters since a precocious child could exhibit such characteristics, although it seems unlikely. But such a mixture of attributes leaves a fan writer constricted. Fan depictions of Tomoyo sometimes play her off as someone who's about to break from thriving off of false bliss, or perhaps (to be very blunt) a Mary Sue. But a Mary Sue made of Tomoyo is inevitable as she is already technically a Canon Sue; she's depicted with almost no flaws whatsoever. Her wish for Sakura's happiness is too ideal, too altruistic, too unrealistic for someone human. I personally admire Tomoyo for being an example that no real person can actually live up to. Other supporters of her character adore her serene and gentle nature with a childish naughty zeal to her flavor. But such a character does deserve a happiness of her own, not someone else's.
