I knew that I committed a wrong.

Let's get the basics out of the way. You're here at a fanlisting for Sohma Kazuma, and... what is it you're doing here? A fanlisting's goal is to list as many people who love a particular subject. That's pretty self-explanatory. And what about Fruits Basket's Kazuma?

His Role; Kazuma is one of the many supporting characters in the Fruits Basket who aren't cursed. Rather, he grew up under a roof of scorn and loathing against the cat. This hatred he learned surfaced when Kazuma was once confronted by his grandfather, the cat preceding Kyou. Kazuma reacted with nothing but disgust and animosity towards an innocuous offer of candy, afraid he would be cursed if he made contact with the old man. Although disheartened by Kazuma's reaction, his grandfather still smiled. He never realized the severity of his comments until after his grandfather had passed on, Kyou then assuming his role of the cat in the family. Kazuma then could see the injustice of such a child receiving such ill feelings for what was thought of him rather than the very person he was. It was then that Kazuma knew the way he treated his grandfather was heavily undeserved.

With his grandfather having passed on, Kazuma knew that one way to achieve redemption was to take Kyou in and care for him, teaching him martial arts. Although this chance for redemption meant only benefitting himself, rather than Kyou, Kazuma began to harbor feelings for Kyou as a father would to his son. Kyou was much slower to admitting that level of the relationship though, in fear of burdening Kazuma with the weight of hatred from the family that coincided with Kyou's affections. But they eventually did become exactly like father and son. My fascination with Kazuma runs deep because his role in the series doesn't require dynamic changes on his part. What the readers see of him at first is what he became after realizing the errors of his youth. He unearthed a compassion that fulfilled a fatherly model for Kyou. Kazuma knew how to love Kyou, feeling past the pity for Kyou and his own regret with his grandfather. He wanted Kyou to experience the best life he could possibly have, wanting the curse to break and allow Kyou to live on without being confined.

His Character; Among all the characters, Kazuma is probably one of the oldest, as Takaya claimed that he's in his forties, despite drawing him young. He can be a bit bubbly sometimes, very clumsy and absent-minded in the kitchen, but his demeanor immediately does become serious when confronted with matters concerning important people in his life. His involvement with Kyou is so straightforward and narrow, he can't even keep up one relationship with a woman. (Well, there's that slight flirtation with Hanajima Saki that freaks Kyou out of his wits. And I'm all for them, baby.) Overall, Kazuma's just one of those relaxed, go-with-the-flow men who are settled with their lives, whose apprecation and love are so warm and endearing, one yearns to deserve it.

His Appearance; He looks just about as old as the mabudachi trio, but apparently he just has a baby face. He usually wears formal clothing in gray shades. In the anime, he's depicted with grey hair as well, which seems to emphasis his age more. However, colored manga illustrations have revealed that he actually has sandy brown hair. Takaya probably did this to bring out younger features in him, or to at least illuminate what was already thought was undeveloped about him, such as the characteristics mentioned in the previous section. This, however, doesn't limit his wisdom. His past experiences have fermented his teachings and philosophies, culminating into an extremely likable character.
